How to choose a colour theme in your home!

This task serves as the fundamental foundation for cultivating harmony and style within your home. Once this groundwork is established, the subsequent steps of selecting materials and furniture become considerably easier. It's essential to follow your chosen color palette and here are some carefully selected tips for you to consider:

  • Mood Matters: Prioritize the mood you wish to inspire within the space. For a tranquil and serene ambiance, consider cooler hues such as blues and greens. Conversely, if you seek vibrancy and energy, embrace bold, warm tones like reds and oranges:

  • Take inspiration from existing elements: Look at the colours in your existing furnishings, artwork, or other elements that will be in the space, you may even consider bringing in colours from nature. Pull out colours that you like and consider using them as a starting point for your base color palette:

  • Use the colour wheel to assemble the right colours together. Understanding monochromatic colours with different shades of a single colour, complementary colours (opposite on the wheel), analogous colours (next to each other on the wheel), and triadic colours (forming an equilateral triangle) can help you create harmonious combinations. Decide and stick to your chosen colour scheme for the entire space to ensure a cohesive and harmonious look. I recommend choosing maximum 2-3 base colours:

  • Take into account the room's intended function: Consider how the space will be utilized and select colors accordingly. For instance, soothing and neutral hues are ideal for bedrooms, fostering a tranquil atmosphere, whereas vibrant and stimulating colors may be more fitting for dynamic areas like a playroom or kitchen:

  • Experiment with paint samples : Purchase small paint samples and test them on the wall to see how they look in different lighting conditions. Take note of how the colours appear in natural light and artificial light, as they can significantly affect the overall appearance.

  • Balance warm and cool tones: To create a balanced and harmonious base colour palette, aim for a mix of warm and cool tones. This can prevent the space from feeling too overwhelming or too cold.

  • Consider the size and layout of the space: Lighter and cooler colors can make a room feel more spacious, while darker and warmer colors can create a cozy and intimate atmosphere. Ultimately, personal preference plays a significant role, so choose colours that you love and feel comfortable with. It's also helpful to gather inspiration from interior design magazines, websites, or social media platforms to see how professionals have used colors in similar spaces:

  • Utilize the 60/30/10 rule, a principle often employed in interior design to achieve a balanced color scheme. Here's how it works: The dominant color (60%), typically neutral hues, should encompass the largest portion of the room, such as walls or major furniture pieces. The secondary color (30%) complements the dominant hue and adds depth and interest to the space; it's ideal for furniture, curtains, or smaller accent pieces. This color should be distinct enough to prevent monotony. Lastly, the accent color (10%) is sparingly used for accessories, decorative pillows, art, or smaller decor elements. It serves to create focal points and infuse personality into the space. Incorporate various textures within these colors for added visual interest. In a monochromatic setting, experiment with tones and shades of the same color for a cohesive look:

In brief :

  1. Choose wether you want your space calm (cool colours) or vibrant (warm colours)

  2. Choose colours you wish to use getting help from the colour wheel (1, 2 or 3 colours)

  3. Choose dominant colour (60%)

  4. Choose secondary colour (30%)

  5. Choose secondary colour (10%)

Note : Have fun with your colours and stick to your palette. You will have plenty of moments to bring in other colours throughout the years :)
